Fable Guide & Walkthrough

What is Fable?

Fable is an open-world action RPG from developer Playground Games, published by Xbox Game Studios for Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PlayStation 5. It trades the grim realism of typical fantasy games for a storybook fairy tale world where your reputation matters more than your sword. This is a fresh start for the series — it doesn’t continue the older games’ storylines, though echoes of the original lore and the land of Albion remain. Every choice you make shapes your journey, your relationships with non-player characters, and how the world reacts to you — and fairytale endings are never guaranteed.

Getting started

You begin as a child in Albion, discovering heroic powers early in life during what functions as the game’s opening tutorial. After a time jump, you rejoin the story as an adult hero in your home village of Briar Hill. The inciting event comes quickly: a stranger turns your grandmother and the village to stone, sending you out into the world to investigate what happened.

Early on, the story points you toward the Heroes’ Guild, a key point of interest in the opening hours. From there, the map opens up. You can travel freely between southern villages and northern regions, with the capital Bowerstone — home to Fairfax Castle and the Heroes’ Guild — serving as the hub you’ll return to again and again. Resist the urge to sprint through the main quest; the early hours reward slow, curious play.

Tips for beginners

  • Treat reputation as your real currency. In Fable, how the world responds to you hinges on how you’ve behaved, so decide early what kind of hero you want to be.
  • Talk to everyone you meet. Your choices shape relationships with NPCs, and dialogue in Briar Hill and Bowerstone carries story, hints, and consequences.
  • Don’t rush the main story. Free travel means you can roam southern villages and northern regions, and early exploration makes later choices easier to understand.
  • Use Bowerstone as your home base. Fairfax Castle and the Heroes’ Guild make it the natural hub, and the Guild is a story focal point early on.
  • Expect consequences. Choices affect story outcomes and how the world reacts, so don’t assume a single “right” answer exists for every situation.
  • Remember the tone: this is a fairy tale world, not standard high fantasy. It doesn’t continue the previous storylines, but original lore and Albion are woven in.
  • Pay attention to the childhood opening. It teaches the basics and explains why you leave Briar Hill — this setup matters for everything that follows.

Is it worth playing?

For anyone who loves choice-driven RPGs, Fable shapes up as a genuinely promising open-world adventure. The fairy tale setting, the emphasis on reputation, and a story that promises real consequences for your decisions all set it apart from generic fantasy fare — and because it starts fresh rather than continuing the older games, newcomers don’t need any prior Fable knowledge. If you’re on Xbox Series X|S, PC, or PlayStation 5 and want a world that genuinely reacts to your choices, it’s worth keeping on your radar.
